Programme Overview

This program is conducted in two stages:

  1. Preclinical Phase – A two year program, which covers Medical Science courses (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Dental Courses (Professional Development and IT, Oral Biology, Society and Health, Preventive Dentistry, Dental Public Health, Dental Materials and Dental Technology). The latter is designed to help the students learn about the technical aspects of the dental program. Assessments take place in every semester along with yearly professional examinations.
  2. Clinical Phase – This phase covers the next three years of study. In this phase, integrated teaching and learning process is undertaken to expose the students to dental clinical work and it also helps them to learn about community dentistry. This program offers the students with the opportunity to enhance their critical thinking skills and acquire knowledge about a particular discipline of dentistry through research exercise, which is of interest to them. It includes subjects, such as Preventive Dentistry and Dental Public Health, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Conservative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Periodontology, Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine, Dental Imaging, Endodontics and Dental Research. Students of this program, will also be exposed to medical subjects namely; General Medicine and General Surgery for better treatment of patients with chronic illness, who may require special needs as far as dental treatment is concerned.

A. The selection for admission to a Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme or equivalent implies selection for the dental profession.

A person who is qualified in Dentistry from a dentistry programme recognized by the Malaysian Dental Council (“Council”) is entitled to be registered by the Council. The fitness to practise Dentistry of the applicant shall be considered in the selection for entry into any dental programme.

B. The practice of Dentistry requires the highest standards of professional and personal conduct as well as professional competence.

1. Although some students have attained the academic standards required, they might not be suitable to for a career in Dentistry. This is to safeguard the interest of the public and of the applicant himself. It is better not to gain admission than to subsequently have to leave the course or profession.

2. It is the responsibility of the dental school to ensure that there are no particular circumstances that will impact upon an applicant’s fitness to practise upon graduation.

3. All applicants shall declare if they have all the followings which may impact upon their future practice.
i. been found guilty of any criminal offence(s);
ii. serious physical or mental illness; and/or
iii. serious communicable disease(s).

4.  A person with any of the following shall be disqualified from entry into a dental programme:
i. found guilty of offence(s) affecting the human body;
ii. recent or serious dishonesty e.g. cheating in examinations, falsification of documents, plagiarism;
iii. serious physical or mental disorder;
iv. serious communicable disease(s) for which there are no available acceptable methods of protection

5.  Failure to declare information that has a material influence on a student’s fitness to practise may lead to termination of their dental course, as honesty, integrity and good health are essential attributes of a dental practitioner and by extension, the dental student.

6.  In the event of any doubt, the dental school shall seek clarification from the Council.

7.  All decision makers of dental schools and aspiring applicants are advised to study the Council’s guidelines available at www.mdc.gov.my.

C. A high level of academic attainment is expected.
1. An understanding of science, in particular chemistry and biology, is central to the understanding of Dentistry. However, the Council recognizes the diversity of subjects taken by applicants and the contributions of those who have entered dental schools with other qualifications.

2. All applicants shall have attained a level of competence in English to enable them to complete the course successfully.

3. All applicants entering the dental programme via matriculation, foundation or pre- dental programme, except those with a degree qualification, STPM or A level shall have passed and attained a minimum of the following at School Certificate level or its equivalent:

5. Applicants shall be required to pass an aptitude test and/or an interview and/or a university entrance examination.

6. Graduates seeking employment in the government need credit in Bahasa Malaysia at SPM level.

7. For qualifications not listed in this document, the institution must obtain an equivalence assessment of the qualification from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

8. Clarifications shall be sought from the Council in situations for which there are no provisions in this guideline

9. Graduates from a dental programme who seek employment in the public sector must fulfill the criteria set by the Public Services Commission of Malaysia (SPA).

There are excellent career options for Dental graduates and they can wish to pursue their career as dental officers in the Ministry of Health, Malaysian Armed Forces or any other government agencies. Students can aslo work in clinics or can choose to work in universities or institutions as lecturers/professors. Students interested in research, can opt to work in research centers or corporate agencies, to advance their career.

Graduates of Dentistry of Lincoln University College are eligible to be registered with the Malaysian Dental Council and undergo a two-year compulsory service (Malaysian citizens only) or any other requirement(s) depicted by the Malaysian Dental Council, on a frequent basis.

Research Project

Research Project is a compulsory component of the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) programme and is designed to develop students’ competence in applying scientific knowledge, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based dentistry to address relevant dental or oral health problems.

Successful completion of the Project demonstrates the student’s ability to integrate foundational sciences, clinical dentistry, research methodology, and professional ethics in accordance with the Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs) of the DDS programme.

The Project may be conducted in one of the following approved area:

•         Clinical Research Project

•         Laboratory-based Research Project

•         Epidemiological / Public Health Dentistry Project

•         Systematic Review or Evidence-Based Dentistry Project

•         Clinical Audit / Case Series (where applicable and approved)

The project topic must be relevant to dental sciences and aligned with the scope of dental practice and oral healthcare delivery.

Industrial Training

Successful completion of Industrial training attachments, demonstrating the application of theoretical knowledge and professional skills in a real industry environment, including:

·         Apply dental knowledge and clinical skills in authentic practice settings

·         Develop professionalism, communication skills, and ethical conduct

·         Gain exposure to routine and specialized dental procedures

·         Understand dental practice management, patient safety, and infection control

·         Experience multidisciplinary teamwork within healthcare systems

·         Prepare for independent dental practice upon graduation

Training attachments- Industrial Training attachments shall be conducted at approved training centres, which may include:

·         University dental hospitals or clinics

·         Government dental hospitals and clinics

·         Approved private dental clinics or specialty centres

·         Public health dentistry units or community dental programmes

·         Dental research or specialty institutions (where applicable and approved)

All training placements must be approved by the Faculty/School and comply with regulatory and professional standards.

Academic Standing

Academic standing refers to a student’s overall academic status in the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) programme and is determined based on performance in all prescribed coursework, clinical training, industrial training, and project or research components.

Students must maintain satisfactory academic standing throughout the duration of the programme to be eligible for progression and graduation.

A student is considered to be in good academic standing if he or she:

·         Successfully passes all courses, clinical postings, industrial training, and project components as prescribed in the approved DDS curriculum

·         Achieves the minimum required grade point average (GPA/CGPA), where applicable, in accordance with university regulations

·         Completes all formative and summative assessments within the prescribed timelines

·         Has no outstanding incomplete grades, failed courses, or pending assessments

·         Demonstrates satisfactory attainment of Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) and Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

Final Approval

Endorsement by the School, Academic Committees, and approval by the Lincoln University College Senate.

Final approval for the award of the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree is granted only after a student has successfully fulfilled all academic, clinical, and professional requirements of the programme in accordance with the approved curriculum and university regulations.

Conditions for Final Approval –

·         Successful completion of all prescribed courses, clinical postings, industrial training, and project or research components

·         Fulfilment of all formative and summative assessment requirements with no outstanding incomplete grades or failed courses

·         Attainment of all Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) and Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs) as stipulated by the DDS programme

·         Maintenance of satisfactory academic and professional standing throughout the duration of the programme

·         Compliance with all ethical, clinical, and professional conduct requirements

·         Settlement of all academic, administrative, and financial obligations to the University

Final approval for graduation is granted through the following process:

·         Verification of academic and clinical completion by the Faculty/School

·         Endorsement by the relevant Faculty Boards and Academic Committees

·         Approval by the University Senate or equivalent statutory academic authority

Only students who have met all programme requirements and have received Senate approval shall be eligible for the conferment of the DDS degree.

Conferment of Degree –

The Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree is conferred at the official convocation ceremony or through formal award procedures as determined by the University.

Graduation is awarded strictly upon final approval, and no provisional or conditional awards shall be granted.

Graduation is awarded only upon successful completion of all prescribed formative and summative assessment components. Students must demonstrate satisfactory attainment of the Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) and Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs) in accordance with the approved assessment structure of the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) programme.

No, you cannot do internship as a foreign student.

Research is a component of the DDS program; you will be given a chance to pursue a research study during the DDS program itself.

The practical depends on the subjects involved. For year 1 and 2. Practical’s will be lab based for basic medical science subjects and simulatory laboratory for dental subjects. For year 3, 4 and 5, practical exercises include patient treatment which will be supervised individually by our experienced staff.

The practical sessions will be conducted at designated clinics within the university. However, we have MOUs with private and government institutions to give our students additional practical exposure.

Yes, the Faculty of Dentistry have a student group called the “LUC Densa”. This student group is involved in various curricular and extracurricular activities like NDSSC, Community Camps, Family Day out, Gala night etc.

The DDS program has a specialized subject- ‘Dental Public Health’ which will offer the students ample opportunities to engage in community projects.

After the completion of the DDS program, you have to complete the mandatory government postings for a minimum of 1 year, following which you will obtain your Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) by the MDC, this for Malaysian student. For International students, they can start working after year 5.

As an international candidate you cannot apply for an Annual Practicing License at the MDC. However, if you obtain a job at any Malaysian Institute/Clinic, the employer will assist you in obtaining a Temporary Practicing certificate on your behalf.

Application Process
What is the application deadline for the DDS program?

The DDS program has a single intake every year and the academic year begins from the first week of November. It is advised that you finish the application process in advance to avoid any delay in starting the program on time. We still can accept the student until end of December.

Recommendation letters are not required for joining the DDS program. Academic transcripts signifying the eligibility of the candidate is sufficient to join the DDS program.

A short interview/aptitude test will be conducted by the faculty of dentistry to determine the candidate’s aptitude for pursuing the DDS program.

Deferment / Withdrawal
Will I be able to defer the program after taking admission in the DDS program?

Deferral is allowed for genuine reasons. Normally we allow deferment for 1 year. The student has to submit a formal letter requesting deferment along with supporting documents (Medical certificates etc). The application will be reviewed by the faculty and forwarded to the university for approval. NOTE: For international students, Deferment may result in difficulty for Visa renewal. So, the students have to discuss the issue with the program coordinator/Dean prior to submitting any applications.

Future Prospects
After my DDS program, what are the options I can pursue in Malaysia?

After the DDS program, you can enroll in the MSc program at LUC or any other university in Malaysia.

Career Prospects
As a foreigner, will I be allowed to practice dentistry after completed?

International students are not eligible to practice dentistry in Malaysia. So international students can return to their home countries or apply for licensure qualification examination in countries like USA, Australia, UK etc. LUC will help the students in orienting them for these examinations.

Local students will have to compulsorily work as an intern at Government Hospitals in Malaysia as part of internship for a minimum duration of 1 year. Following the internship, some students may be given an opportunity to continue their job while others can join private dental clinics as locum or setup their own practice. For international students, they have to return to their home country for completion of internship. International dentists can work in Malaysia only if they have an employment contract from public or private institutions.

What are the basic requirements for joining the DDS program?

As an international student, you will have to submit transcripts for studies equivalent to 12 years of schooling. We accept students from across the world. The minimum duration of the DDS program as set by the Malaysian Dental council and Malaysian Qualification Agency is 5 Years. Hence, there is no program available that is lesser than 5 Years Duration under dentistry.

The DDS program has a single intake per year and the program starts in the first week of November every year. You can apply for admission at any time of the year but admission closes on the 31st of December for that particular academic year.

No prior work experience is required for joining the DDS Program.

Yes, qualifications recognized as equivalent by the Malaysian government are accepted.

Diploma in health sciences students can enroll in the DDS program. The diploma program should be minimum 2 & half years/5 semesters. Minimum CGPA 3.0 & above/ Minimum B in any 2 subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and any Grade in (English, Mathematics & any other subject)

The candidate should be free from any serious physical or mental illness that would hamper the practice of dentistry. Medical check-ups for serious communicable diseases such as hepatitis is mandatory prior to admission into the DDS program.

English Proficiency
What are the language requirements for international students?

International applicants whose first language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency. This is commonly done through TOEFL or IELTS scores. The minimum required TOEFL score is typically around 90 (internet-based test), and the IELTS minimum is around 5. The equivalent English proficiency accepted by the EMGS include MUET (Malaysian University English Test), IELTS/ IELTS Online (International English Language Testing System), TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language), TOEFL Essentials (Online) (Test of English as a Foreign Language), PTE Academic/ PTE Academic (Online)(Pearson Test of English), Cambridge English – B1 Preliminary,B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency, Cambridge English – Linguaskill Online, Cambridge English – Occupational English Test (OET)(Conventional/Online), ELS – Certified Intensive English Programme Level (CIEP Level)

Yes, you can take the MUET during your studies. We offer the flexibility for students to take MUET while enrolled in their programs, especially if need to meet specific English language proficiency requirements for graduation.

Credit-Transfer
After joining DDS program, can I transfer to other program or university?

LUC allows transfer to other programs offered by the university provided the candidate attains eligibility for that program. This is achieved by transfer of credits from the departing program to the program the candidate wishes to join. Transfer to another university is possible but quite complicated and dependent on a number of factors based on the ministry of higher education and Malaysian qualification agency.

The documents typically required for a credit transfer application include: Official Academic Transcripts; Course Syllabi/Descriptions; English Proficiency certificates; Identification Documents (A valid ID or passport to verify your identity).

Teaching /Learning /Assessment
How are the students assessed during the examinations?

Assessment includes two components: Formative and summative. During the course of the program a number of formative assessments will be done which will include feedbacks for seminars/ assignments/group activities/ clinical procedures etc. Module tests and mock examinations will be conducted during the academic year. Professional examination which will be written and practical based will be conducted at the end of the academic year.

Students need to know learning outcomes of the subject, because teaching and exam must be related to the learning outcomes. Practice model questions during tutorial session.

We have borderline Viva for students who have fallen short of the passing grade. This will give the student an opportunity to clear the examinations within the first attempt. If the candidate has failed in the examination, we will conduct a remedial examination giving the student a second opportunity to improve the grades and move on to the next year. The university will provide feedback and remedial support, such as additional mentorship, to help you improve. Failure to clear the remedial examination will result in repeating the academic year.

What is the tuition fee?

It is important that all fees that are due be paid on time. Failure to make the payment on time may result in candidate not permitted to take up the examination or attend convocation.

Attendance
Is there any class attendance requirement?

Yes, every student must have minimum of 80% class attendance to be eligible to take any of the examination.

If your attendance falls below the required minimum, you may be barred from taking the final exams for that subject, and you might have to repeat the course in the following semester.

Yes, exceptions may be made for valid medical reasons, participation in university-sanctioned events, or other documented emergencies. Supporting documents must be submitted to the relevant department for approval.

Attendance is usually recorded by the instructor during each class, through an online system. Students are advised to regularly check their attendance status through the student portal or learning management system (LMS).

Yes, LUC offers students the option to check their attendance through an online portal (LLS). You can view your daily, weekly, and overall attendance for each subject.

If you notice any discrepancies in your attendance record, you should immediately contact your instructor or the academic office to resolve the issue.

Yes, you can request a leave of absence for personal reasons by submitting a formal request to the academic office. Make sure to check the institution’s leave policy and provide appropriate documentation.

Graduation Requirements
What are the minimum academic requirements to graduate from DDS program?
  • Successful completion of all Year-End Professional Examinations.
  • Completion of all required clinical experiences (MCE and ECE).
  • Successful completion of the undergraduate research project as per institutional requirements.

Minimum CGPA required to pass will be >2.0

The program has a total 281 credit hours

All courses tested as a part of the professional examination requires mandatory passing to progress to further years and graduate.  

Must have attained a minimum attendance of 80% in each academic year.

Training Placement- Industrial Training/ attachments shall be conducted at approved training centres, which may include:

  • University dental hospitals or clinics
  • Government dental hospitals and clinics
  • Approved private dental clinics or specialty centres
  • Public health dentistry units or community dental programmes
  • Dental research or specialty institutions (where applicable and approved)

All training placements must be approved by the Faculty/School and comply with regulatory and professional standards.

Completion of the undergraduate-level research project is mandatory, in accordance with institutional requirements.

No. Any failure or incompletion in professional examinations will require repetition of the respective course and/or academic year, and graduation will not be permitted until all requirements are successfully fulfilled.

Language of delivery – English & Bahasa Melayu (MPU subjects)

Exit test – Professional qualifying exams (Applicable to those planning to register with Malaysian Dental Council and practice in Malaysia)

 

All financial dues to the institution must be fully cleared. In addition, students must obtain clearance from all relevant administrative units, including but not limited to the library, hostel/accommodation, laboratories, clinics, and any other departments as specified by the institution, prior to approval for graduation.

Minimum duration for DDS Program – 5 years

The program is structured over five academic years, comprising a total of ten terms, with two terms conducted in each academic year.

Doctor of Dental Surgery Program is a combination of didactic learning, clinical training and research.

Interruption of the program is generally discouraged. However, under exceptional circumstances, a student may be permitted to take a break in studies, subject to approval by the University Senate. Such a break shall not exceed a maximum duration of two years. The maximum duration permitted for completion of the program is seven years.

No. The Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) program comprises specialty-based and comprehensive clinical training across multiple departments. As such, the program structure does not permit the alignment or transfer of micro-credentials or microcredits toward degree requirements. Furthermore, the use of micro-credentials for credit transfer is not permitted by the relevant governing bodies in Malaysia.

For qualifications not listed under the entry requirement by the Malaysian Dental Council – the University admissions will seek equivalence assessment from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

Fulfilment of English requirements is mandatory prior enrolment.  

Candidates are granted a period of six months to fulfill and submit acceptable evidence of proficiency, as specified by the institution.
