Programme Overview

The problems related to Power Quality (PQ) are often difficult to solve and the solutions is not always  simple especially for those engineers and professionals who are not trained in PQ. The optimal solution to a PQ problem is usually a mix of solutions for a specific situation.

Power quality, reliability and availability must be considered as a complete set from the design stage because they are closely related. Equipment is designed for normal operation  within a rated range of power supply values. Small deviations from these values can result in increased  losses, poor efficiency, and unpredictable operation. Large deviations can cause protective devices to trip or the failure of a component.

In addition, components always break down from time to time because they have a limited lifetime. Thus, both power quality and reliability influence the availability of any facility. Availability is easier to estimate than reliability, so users are more concerned about the former. Nevertheless, the way to increase the availability is through power quality and reliability improvements.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course participants should be able to:

• Explain the concept of power quality, factors affecting the power quality, safety of grounding, power quality measurements and devices.
• Evaluate the signal and the (sources) noise generated in the systems and eliminate noise in the system
• Evaluate the system performances and increase the delivery efficiency by improving the power factor
• Analyze the effect of Electromagnetic interference in human body and gain understanding of the procedures to avoid this hazard for safety reason
• Prepare an assignment based on the topics related to power quality using valid online
• Presentation a topic based on power quality.
