Micro-Credential in Developmental Biology
Programme Overview
The goal of the course is to understand the process of development from single cells into a multicellular organism. The course focuses on development of organisms and acts as an interface between development and evolution. The course is essential to understand the nature of numerous changes that occur in an organism during biological development. This unit will introduce the students to the field of developmental biology, including some of its most fundamental preoccupations, its early history, and the understanding of gametogenesis and fertilization. The Developmental Biology course consists of the topics like introduction of animal development, the origins of sexual reproduction, fertilization, cleavage, early embryonic development gametogenesis, fertilization, morphogenesis and organogenesis in animals, cell aggregation and differentiation, environmental regulation of normal development and others.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course participants should be able to:
- Discuss the relevance of gametogenesis, early development, morphogenetic processes, growth and death in developmental biology
- Analyze the genetics and development of the six model organisms (Xenopus, the zebrafish, the chick, the mouse, drosophila, and Caenorhabditis elegans)
- Execute relevant experimental embryology, normal development and developmental commitment in the laboratory
- Prepare assignment using a variety of resource materials
- Present orally on Developmental Biology
Course Progression
Credits from this Micro-Credential Programme are transferable to the following full academic programme:
- Degree of Biotechnology
Assessments
- Coursework 80%
- Final Examination 20%
