Programme Overview

The Master of Science in Public Health (by Research) program under the Faculty of Medicine is designed to give students academic and technical skills in broad areas. This program prepares professionals to work on a wide range of public health initiatives;policy advocacy, health education, institutional administration, treatment delivery and disease prevention. The program combines the precise training in international relations theory and practice with the analytical and quantitative tools of policy making. The program teaches students a wide range of skills that are valuable for careers in government, business, and international organizations. Global health concerns such as AIDS, avian bird flu, SARS, malnutrition, global warming and the recent Ebola virus have significantly increased awareness and understanding of the critical importance of public health in today’s global society. The program would train students in a breadth of research and practice intended to improve population health across the life course. The program is designed as a trans formative program, which offers students the education, training, and first-hand experience essential for successful international careers.

Minimum Entry Requirement:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with minimum CGPA of 2.75 in related field, as accepted by the HEP Senate; OR
  2. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with CGPA between 2.50 and 2.75, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment; OR
  3. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in related field with CGPA of less than 2.50 and a minimum of 5 years working experience in the related field.

English Language Proficiency Requirements for International Students:

  1. Minimum IELTS Band 6.0; OR
  2. TOEFL 550 (Paper Based Test) or 79-80 (Internet Based Test); OR
  3. If the student does not fulfill the above criteria, the HEP must offer English proficiency course to ensure that student is proficient in the language to the standard required by the program.

Successful completion and passing of all compulsory University-level courses prescribed by the Centre for Postgraduate Studies (CPGS), and fulfilment of all required research milestones as stipulated in the approved programme structure.

Continuous (Formative) Assessment

Completion of prescribed assessments for all taught courses and the capstone project, as applicable, including:

Written research proposal

• Seminar presentations

Final (Summative) Assessment

Successful evaluation of the Master’s thesis, including:

(The Master of Science in Public Health is a fully research-based programme and does not include industrial training.)

Academic Standing

Students must successfully complete the research thesis and all compulsory programme requirements, with no outstanding assessments, incomplete status, or failed components, at the time of graduation approval.

Final Approval

Graduation is subject to endorsement by the School of Medicine, relevant Academic Committees, and final approval by the Lincoln University College Senate.

Graduation is awarded only upon successful completion of all prescribed formative and summative assessment components. Students must demonstrate satisfactory attainment of the Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) and Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs) in accordance with the approved assessment structure of the Master of Science in Public Health (By Research) programme.

Classes are typically held on weekdays for full-time students. Part-time students may have evening or weekend classes. The timetable is flexible and updated each semester.

Graduation Requirements

What are the minimum academic requirements to graduate from my Master of Science in Public Health (By Research) program?

Students must successfully complete an original and independent research study, submit a doctoral thesis that meets the standards of Lincoln University College and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), fulfil the University’s publication and research dissemination requirements (which may include publications in recognised journals and conference presentations), and pass the final viva voce examination, subject to approval by the University Senate.

As this is a research-based programme, graduation is not based on CGPA. However, students must obtain a Pass status for the thesis and fulfil all academic requirements as stipulated by the University.

The programme includes 6 credit hours of compulsory coursework and a research thesis component that is assessed through proposal defence, progress evaluation, thesis submission, and viva voce examination.

Compulsory Coursework Modules:

·         Computer Application — 3 credits

The thesis component does not carry a fixed numerical credit value, in line with master research programme structures.
