Programme Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Engineering programme has been designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge in various fields of specialization to enable them to formulate questions and plan and carry out research in their respective subject areas. The candidates would be able to conduct a high-level research and address complex technical questions and challenge the established knowledge and practices on the respective subjects. The PhD candidates would be capable enough to evaluate the work of others as well, at the same level. The candidates will also evaluate the application of different techniques in the subject areas and shall contribute to the development of new theories, new knowledge and new methods in the respective subject area.

For successful completion of PhD degree in LUC, each candidate should publish minimum of Four research articles in scopus indexed journals, with Lincoln affiliation.

Entry Requirements :

  1. Recognized Master’s degree (Malaysian Qualifications Framework, MQF Level 7) in Engineering or its equivalent; or
  2. Other qualifications equivalent to a Master’s degree (MQF Level 7) that are accepted by the Senate
  3. English language requirements for international students;
    • A minimum score in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
    i. 550 in the TOEFL Paper Based Test; OR
    ii. 80 in the TOEFL Internet Based Test; OR
    • A minimum score of 6.0 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

The PhD in Engineering programme in Lincoln University College is designed to prepare a selected number of qualified students for careers in university-level teaching and research and for responsible positions in Government and Private Engineering industries. The primary aims of the programme are:

  • To provide students with advanced knowledge in the theory and practice of areas of engineering studies with the concept of research work.
  • To prepare the learners for critical problem solving, decision making on various situations and responsibilities in the course of their research work
  • To create qualified managerial level Engineering professionals to provide support towards Engineering work in their specialty subjects

  • To train student about the significance of skills and knowledge in specialties under Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Management, Geotechnical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Bioengineering, Biochemical Engineering, Engineering Management, Production and Industrial Engineering.

Entry Requirements

Program Duration

Full time mode duration is 3-5 years and part time mode duration is 4-10 years.

Intakes

We have intake for March, July, and November. Although applications can be submitted at any time of the year. Notification of acceptance/rejection will be given within 2 calendar months from the date of receipt of the completed application form. (For international students, subjected to the approval from EMGS).

Credits

No credit hours are defined under this structure. However, Research Methodology and Computer Application course are compulsory for the students for their research work.

Equivalent Qualifications

Yes, qualifications recognized as equivalent by the Malaysian government are accepted.

Age Limit

There is no age limit to study in any engineering program as long as you meet the entry requirements.

 Part-Time Enrollment

Yes, the duration for part-time mode is 4 -10 years.

Assessment Methods

Completion of coursework, Logbook, Research Proposal, Research Progress Presentations, Dissertation/thesis, and Viva voce.

Yes, for graduate, a master’s student must publish in: two (2) International conference proceedings and Minimum of 2 Scopus indexed journals (Quartile: Q1/Q2/Q3/Q4).

Graduation Requirements

What are the minimum academic requirements to graduate?

Students must successfully complete all compulsory research coursework (if applicable), proposal defence, progress reviews, research publication requirements (where applicable), thesis submission, and viva voce examination within the approved study duration, with final approval by the University Senate.

CGPA is not applicable for research-based programmes. Graduation is based on successful completion of prescribed research milestones and thesis evaluation.

Research-based programmes do not carry conventional credit hours. Completion is based on research milestones and thesis requirements as approved by the University.

Yes. Students must pass all compulsory research courses (such as Research Methodology and related research support courses, where applicable) before progressing to advanced research stages.

Yes. Students are required to maintain satisfactory academic engagement, including scheduled supervision meetings, seminars, progress reviews, and other academic activities as stipulated by the programme.

No. Internship or industrial training is not required for PhD and Master by Research programmes.

Yes. Submission of an original research thesis and successful completion of the viva voce examination are mandatory for graduation.

No. Students must have no failed, incomplete, or outstanding academic requirements at the point of graduation approval.

There is no exit language test for graduation. However, students must demonstrate sufficient academic English proficiency to complete and defend their thesis.

Students must clear all outstanding fees, submit all required academic documents, and complete administrative clearance with relevant university departments prior to Senate approval.

·         Doctor of Philosophy (PhD): Minimum 3 years

Research-based programmes consist of research methodology/support courses (if applicable) and a research thesis component. There are no conventional taught modules like coursework programmes.

This is a fully research-based programme.

Yes, subject to maximum duration limits for 6 Months, visa regulations (for international students), and approval by the University. Continuous academic engagement is strongly encouraged.

No. Research-based programmes cannot be completed through micro-credentials or micro-credits.

Applicants with UK or other international qualifications (e.g., OTHM) may be considered subject to equivalency assessment, academic suitability, and approval by the University Senate.

Yes. Conditional admission may be granted, subject to EMGS and University regulations, with the requirement to complete approved English proficiency support courses.
