OVERVIEW

Pharmacy (or Pharmacology) is a discipline that forms part of the Biomedical Sciences. Practically speaking, Pharmacy is the profession responsible for the preparation, dispensing and appropriate use of medication and services to achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes.

Pharmacists are responsible for the preparation and dispensing of drugs, medicines, ointments, powders, pills, tablets and injections – usually on the prescription of a medical practitioner, dentist or veterinarian. Over and above this, pharmacists are concerned with the development of methods and processes of drug production and quality control.

Hence, it comes as no surprise that the profession of Pharmacy enjoys a reputation of being much sought-after and highly in demand. This goes back to the ancient times of medical chemists who experimented to develop cures for life-threatening disease as well as therapeutic relief.

Today, Pharmacy is a wide-reaching field which is known globally for its excellent career prospects in a range of Biomedical and Bioscience applications. These cover a cross-section of public and private sectors and industries – from healthcare to retail, from research and development to education, even marketing and administration.

Career Opportunities for Pharmacy Graduates
A huge range of career opportunities exist for those with qualifications in Pharmacy. One popular choice is to own and operate your own pharmacy. Upon obtaining a Diploma or Degree in Pharmacy and registering yourself, you may set up your own pharmacy to stock and sell medicines and dispense them according to doctors’ prescriptions.

Career prospects abound in other areas too. For instance, you may choose to undertake research or work for any of the large multinational drug companies operating on these shores. Those in research concern themselves with the synthesis of new drugs and processes, the clinical testing of the effects of such drugs on animals and humans, and obtaining the required licenses for clinical use from drug control authorities.

The tremendous regional expansion in the number of private and specialists’ hospitals, nursing homes and drug company operations is a clear indication of the growing scope in this area as well. You may work in public or private healthcare, where pharmacists are required to explain modes and precautions regarding the use of medicines dispensed at the hospital pharmacy.

If you possess strong marketing and communication skills in addition to your qualification in Pharmacy, you may opt for the highly competitive but rewarding field of medical representation. Medical reps keep doctors and specialists informed about new drugs and treatments developed by their companies, indirectly promoting their sales.

Job avenues also exist in government departments, drug administration and regulatory bodies, research institutes, universities, and teaching hospitals.
