The Doctor of Medicine course will cover a total of five years and it consists of 2 phases i.e a 2 year basic medical sciences phase followed by a 3 year clinical phase. Each year will consist of 2 semesters, each of 20 weeks teaching and learning duration. Clinicians will participate in teaching activities in second year to provide clinical orientation and interpretation. Inclusion of basic science lecturers during the 3 clinical years will provide the necessary vertical integration between basic medical science and clinical teaching and learning process.

The first 2 years of basic medical science will be conducted in the Petaling Jaya Campus while the clinical phase will be done in Lahad Datu, Tawau and Semporna in the hospitals and clinics in the area.

At the end of the MD programme, the graduate will have acquired sufficient knowledge, developed essential clinical competencies and imbibed with the right professional attitudes and values to function as an effective primary care physician.

The duties of medical doctors include the examination of patients, diagnosis, the prescription of medicine, minor operations and different treatments for injuries, diseases and other ailments. It further includes promoting healthy communities by educating them and promoting community development and also acting as a role model.

5 years of MD programme will provide the graduates with all knowledge on how to diagnose and treat diseases and injuries and perform an important function in looking after the well-being of the community. Thorough knowledge of diseases and their symptoms are required for diagnosis and treatment. Medical doctors first compile a clinical history of the patient before they make a diagnosis. Graduates will apply several techniques and apparatus in their examinations in order to form an image of the disease or injury.

Our graduates also know how to handle certain cases based on the experiences in clinical phase which are conducted for three years in Government Hospital in Sabah (Lahad Datu, Tawau, Semporna). It is important that all factors are taken into consideration before a diagnosis is made. Treatment can be medical, surgical and therapeutic. Medical doctors sometimes find it necessary to refer a patient for further diagnosis and special treatment.

A specialized knowledge in one aspect of general medicine may be acquired for further career development.

Medical doctors can work in hospitals, clinics, private practices, state departments, tertiary institutions such as universities in lecturing posts, laboratories, sports and research, etc.
