Details of Project:

Grant Name: FRGS 2014-2
Granting Body: Ministry of Higher Education (MOE-KPM)
Research Title: Evaluation of safety profile of a Fixeddose combination of Antidiabetic and Antihypertensive drug by toxicityprofiling and pharmacokinetic interaction study.

Allocated Amount: RM 82,000
Project Leader: Dr. Arindam Das

Team Members:
1. Dr Pinaki sengupta
2. Puan Norhaziland Fati Bt Mohd Zaid
3. Dr Faridah Mohd Said
4. Dr Uttam Kumar Mandal(IIUM)
5. Dr Bappaditya Chatterjee (IIUM)

Summary of Proposal:
Hypertension is a major contributor to cardiovascular mortality in diabetic subjects. Hence, it is necessary toinclude antihypertensive medication in the antidiabetic therapy regimen foreffective control of complications in diabetes. In the present investigation, safety profile of the Fixed dose combination (FDC) of Pioglitazone, anantidiabetic and Telmisartan, an antihypertensive will be evaluated.

Research Title: Papain Loaded Solid Lipid Nan particles as an Adjuvant Therapy for Colorectal Cancer

Allocated Amount: RM 94,608
Project Leader: Dr. Satheesh Babu Natarajan

Team Members:
1. Mr. Shah Mashood Ahmad (Faculty of Pharmacy)
2. Dr. Nor AshikeenBinti Abd Mokti (Faculty of Medicine)
3. Dr. Norhazira Binti Abdul Rahim (Faculty of Medicine)
4. Mrs. Suriyakala (Faculty of Medicine)
5. Dr. Kathiresan (AIMST University)

Summary of Proposal:
Current developments on solid lipid nano particles (SLN) have gained special attention on cancer chemotherapy. In this research, papain is proposed as a novel adjuvant therapy for the treatment of colorectal cancer. Papain is aproteolytic enzyme extracted from Carica papaya, degrades the protective fibrin layer of cancer cells. The main aim of this proposal is to target the papain loaded SLN delivery system to specifically colorectal cancer cells where they will exert the EPR effect and cleaving the fibrin layer that protect by the cancer cells.
